[ Information | Background | The CyberTeaser | Quantum News | Miscellaneous Stuff ] What is it?Quantum artist Pavel Chernusky took the squares of our math problem and fashioned a tiled stove called a “Dutch stove” (голландская печь, or simply голландка) in Russia. The less ornate Russian stove—a feature of peasant huts for centuries—was a large indoor brick oven that served multiple purposes. It was used for both cooking and space heating, and very often a platform was built on or over it, making it the preferred place to sit or sleep in wintertime. (Many a foreign reader of Russian literature has been baffled by references to “sleeping on the stove,” something that would be far from comfortable on our modern appliance!) The Dutch stove is not to be confused with the “Dutch oven,” as noted by alert CyberTeaser contestant Asher Martin.
